FAQs

Common Misconceptions About Ballistic/Bulletproof Film2025-10-17T09:11:34+00:00
  • “Thicker film = bulletproof.” No. Even relatively thick films are still thin compared with ballistic glazing. Film may reduce spall but cannot reliably stop projectiles.
  • “If I add film to my windows, I don’t need a rated frame.” No. Bullet resistance is a system property — the frame must be rated as well.
When You Need True Bullet Resistant Glazing2025-10-17T09:09:45+00:00
  • When the security requirement is to meet a specific bullet resistant standard (like UL 752) (e.g., protection for cashiers, courts, secure facilities, critical control rooms).
  • Where the liability/risk profile requires certified protection against specified firearms and calibers.
When is ballistic/bulletproof film appropriate?2025-10-17T09:09:19+00:00
  • Mitigating glass injuries from accidental impacts or low‑level vandalism.
  • Reducing spall and entry from thrown objects, some blunt force attacks or delay forced entry.
What is ballistic/bulletproof film?2025-10-17T09:07:33+00:00

While Ballistic Film can be beneficial to enhance non-security or non-bullet resistant glass and providing a non-spalling product, however it will not stop bullets.

Typical thickness of “ballistic film” is 3-8 mils (30 mils = 1/32” or the thickness of a credit card). Compare that to actual “bullet resistant” glass which is ¾” –  4” thick. If the ballistic film cannot meet an UL 752 ballistic standard (https://www.ul.com/news/what-does-it-take-stop-speeding-bullet) it is not truly bulletproof.

If the security situation requires bullet resistant glass, acrylic, or polycarbonate to protect against gun shots, then the only option is real bullet resistant glazing installed in a bullet resistant frame.
